Staying Warm, Well, and Connected This November

As the days grow shorter and the air turns crisp, the November edition of The Scoop is here to keep you informed, inspired, and nourished. This month, we're focusing on important themes like supporting family caregivers, managing health during Diabetes Awareness Month, and celebrating World Kindness Day. Here’s a sneak peek into what you’ll find inside!

Honoring Family Caregivers: Your Unsung Heroes

November is National Family Caregivers Month—a time to acknowledge and honor the incredible individuals who dedicate themselves to caring for loved ones. Did you know that nearly one in five adults in the U.S. serves as an unpaid caregiver? In this issue, we highlight the vital role of caregivers and share resources available through the Northeast Kingdom Council on Aging (NEKCOA). From caregiver support groups to kinship care for relatives raising children, we’re here to help lighten the load. Remember, if you’re a caregiver, you’re not alone, and we’re here to support you.

Diabetes Awareness: Keeping Your Blood Sugar in Check

As colder weather sets in, it's essential to stay on top of your health, especially if you’re managing diabetes. November is Diabetes Awareness Month, and we’ve included practical tips on keeping your blood sugar stable through diet, hydration, and regular meals. At NEKCOA, we understand the importance of a nutritious diet, which is why our Home Delivered Meals program offers customized options for those with diabetes.

Need personalized advice? We have a registered dietitian available for one-on-one nutrition counseling to help you make healthier choices tailored to your needs. Just call our Helpline at (800) 642-5119 to set up an appointment.

Featured Recipe: Veggie Quesadillas with Cilantro Yogurt Dip
This month’s recipe is a delicious way to enjoy a diabetes-friendly meal that’s packed with flavor. These veggie quesadillas, paired with a tangy cilantro yogurt dip, are not only healthy but also easy to prepare. Perfect for a quick dinner or lunch!

Want the recipe? Here’s a quick breakdown:

Ingredients include fresh veggies, whole-wheat tortillas, and a simple yogurt dip. It’s a perfect combination of fiber and protein to keep you feeling full and satisfied.

Celebrate World Kindness Day: A Walk in Nature

November 13th is World Kindness Day—a day to spread joy, compassion, and maybe even take a peaceful walk in nature. We’ve shared an easy exercise activity that combines walking with leaf collecting and stretching. It’s a great way to stay active and lift your spirits during these colder months. Plus, making a “kindness collage” from collected leaves is a fun way to bring a bit of the outdoors into your home.

The Benefits of Walking for Kindness
Walking isn’t just good for the body; it’s also a fantastic way to boost your mood. Even a short stroll can help improve circulation, enhance energy levels, and reduce stress. This month, we encourage you to step outside, breathe in the fresh air, and take a moment to appreciate the beauty of nature.

A Special Shoutout: 3SquaresVT Program

Are you or someone you know over 60 or living with a disability? The 3SquaresVT program is here to help put healthy food on your table. NEKCOA offers assistance with the application process specifically for individuals aged 60+ or those who are disabled.
